Do peptides in skincare actually work?

Topical skincare peptides are short amino-acid chains included in formulations as signalling ingredients — the intent is to prompt skin cells toward behaviour such as collagen production. They are a different proposition again from both injectable research peptides and oral collagen supplements. The central difficulty with the category is not whether peptides can signal skin cells, which is plausible, but whether a given peptide in a given formulation reaches the layer where that would matter, at a concentration that does anything. Ingredient lists do not answer that question, and most marketing does not attempt to.

How they are supposed to work

Peptides act as messengers. In skin, the proposition is that specific sequences signal fibroblasts toward collagen synthesis or otherwise influence the processes behind skin texture and firmness.

Why "contains peptides" tells you almost nothing

Skin is an effective barrier, and that is its job. Whether a topical peptide has any effect depends on the specific sequence, its concentration, the delivery vehicle, and whether it survives to reach living tissue rather than sitting on the surface. A product can truthfully list a peptide and deliver none of it anywhere useful.
